¡¡¡¡ Apoyemos a la LFA !!!!

Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA)

Hace apenas unos días se desarrollaron los primeros partidos de la liga, después de 20 años de ausencia en México, leí un artículo del universal (del cual les dejo el link aqui) que se titula LFA ni tan profesional.

En este artículo se ataca y descalifica a la liga, de que no es más que solo una maqueta de la NFL, me encantaría saber si este señor Ariel Velázquez ha vivido 95 años para saber si la NFL, empezó de manera increible y dando el espectáculo que hoy en día da.

Esta liga apenas está comenzando, actualmente solo cuenta con 4 equipos (Condors, Eagles, Mayas y Raptors) y no podemos darle la espalda tan rápido, recordemos que los jugadores que están en ella no tienen esa continuidad como en la NFL, ya que generalmente pasan del college a la NFL, aquí muchos de los Atletas han estado parados por algún tiempo sin jugar en forma en una liga muy competitiva, otros probablemente lo hacían en las ligas que existen en el país, pero aun así no son ligas que estén al nivel de Estados Unidos.

Por lo que me da rabia y coraje que se descalifique a un proyecto que tiene que empezar poco a poco, que tendrá que combinar al futbol de la liga mayor, con un Draft o algo por el estilo para que los jugadores que salen de la universidad, sigan su carrera profesionalmente y que se fortalezca este proyecto, pero todo esto lleva tiempo y si no le damos la oportunidad que se desarrolle no podremos ver una liga profesional de futbol en México que sea competitiva y llena de emoción como la NFL, si en unos años este proyecto no funciona entonces si estaría de acuerdo con la crítica, pero mientras habrá que apoyarlo.

Si este proyecto funciona podría ser una catapulta para los jugadores mexicanos a la NFL, si logramos tener una liga interesante y espectacular estoy seguro que voltearían a México a ver a esos jugadores, ya que pienso que tenemos algunos jugadores capaces de estar en la NFL, así que en vez de criticar y descalificar apoyemos este proyecto y disfrutemos de este bello deporte.

No sé ustedes que opinen amigos pero yo me voy a subir al tren de la LFA y la apoyare para que en nuestro país haya más Futbol americano y podamos disfrutar por más tiempo de este deporte.

Tazones y mas Tazones

Para finalizar esta temporada 2015 de fútbol americano a nivel universitario (o de la NCAA), habrá 40 tazones de donde escoger!  Si—entendiste bien—CUARENTA! 

La División I (Primera División) de la NCAA se dividió desde un principio en muchas conferencias, y todo se podía poner un poco confuso con tantos campeones llamándose el mejor.  Entonces se les ocurrió darles la oportunidad a los ganadores de cada conferencia de jugar contra otro buen equipo, o sea el ganador de otra conferencia.  Es mas, de ahí podrían coronar al "Campeón Nacional", para realmente cerrar la temporada con broche de oro.  Y así nació el Rose Bowl, conocido como el grand daddy (abuelo) de todos.  

También llegaban el Orange Bowl y el Fiesta Bowl, entre muchos, muchos otros.  Luego se decidió que cada año un tazón iba a ser nombrado como el que iba a decidir el campeón nacional, según cuales dos equipos iban a jugar en el. Se usaba un sistema bastante complicado (que por cierto ya no se usa)* para determinarlo.

Pero a través de los años, varias empresas querían patrocinar un tazón, primero “prestándole” su nombre corporativo y luego "metiendo toda la cuchara. Eso significaba que las empresas se aprovecharon de los enormes beneficios económicos que la gran publicidad les brindaba.  Las universidades apoyaban el cambio porque su parte del dinero que se gano les ayudaba mucho con los gastos gigantescos de mantener sus programas atléticos.  

Pero el pueblo, en general, se molesto y se opuso rotundamente a la decisión porque les parecía que el fútbol universitario debería mantenerse "limpio" sobre todo porque la NFL ya se había "vendido" a las grandes corporaciones y a la televisión. No se le hizo caso. Entonces ya tenemos al Discover Orange Bowl y el Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, etcetera, etcetera. Pero surgió un problema: Solo habóa un determinado número de partidos para patrocinar.  Entonces empezaron a inventar casi un sin fin de otros bowls (tazones) para satisfacer el apetito empresarial.  Luego solo les faltaba encontrar dos equipos que podrían “invitar” a jugar y listo.

Y así llegamos a la controversia de hoy en día.  Este año habrá tres equipos con solo cinco victorias en la temporada, o sea un record de menos de .500, que están invitados a participar en un tazón: La Universidad de Nebraska, la Universidad de Minnesota, y San Jose State. Ahora esta surgiendo una gran queja que el sistema de tazones ya se sobresaturo, y se le esta quitando el prestigio del tazón y el orgullo de ser seleccionado a jugar.  Muchos de los analistas ya predicen que va a haber cambios para la próxima temporada 2016 y que eso sera por el bien de la NCAA.

*Nota:  (Ver abajo)  Para aclarar, ahora se determina el Campeon Nacional de 4 finalistas (determinados de los polls) que juegan un "playoff," estilo NFL, con el #1 contra el #4 y el #2 contra el #3.  Se juegan los 2 partidos el mismo día, este año el 31 de diciembre.  Los dos ganadores juegan en Philadelphia quince días después.

¿Quien ganara el BCS Championship?

Hay un delfín en el acuario de Miami que se dedica a hacer trucos.  Pero resulta que no es cualquier delfin y no son trucos cualquiera.  Cada año, Flipper el delfin predice los resultados del Orange Bowl. Y no solo eso.  En 5 anos nunca ha fallado.  Impresionante, verdad?

Entonces ahora le toca a Flipper, pronosticar, quien va a ganar el partido entre el #1 en los rankings del NCAA, Clemson (Georgia), y el #4, la Universidad de Oklahoma. Van a jugar en el Orange Bowl en Miami en la vispera de Ano Nuevo (31 XII 2015).  Es el partido que ahora, según el nuevo sistema de "playoffs" de la NCAA, sera la semifinal, rumbo al campeonato.

Así que otra vez le encargaron a Flipper un pronostico bastante importante. Ademas su record invicto esta en juego.  ¿Sera mucha presión para el muy querido delfín?

Antes de saber, porque no echamos un vistazo a los 2 equipos...

13-0   Los Tigres de Clemson tienen un record de 13-0, y se les considera el equipo mas fuerte de toda la temporada.  Es mas; es el único equipo en la nación que queda invicto muy parecido a  su amigo el delfín!  Tienen uno de los candidatos al Heisman Trophy, el mariscal Deshaun Watson.  Además el sentido común nos dice que el equipo que no tiene ninguna derrota tiene que ser el favorito. También nos aconseja que lo mas probable es que Clemson no solo vence a la Universidad de Oklahoma para llegar al final, pero que también sera quien finalmente se lleva el trofeo del campeonato a casa.  O sea que ya casi es un hecho que serán campeones este año.  Y una cosa mas, el ano pasado en el Russell Athletic Bowl, Clemson gano a Oklahoma 40-6!

11-1 Por otro lado, los Sooners de Oklahoma han vencido este año a 4 de los 5 equipos que les ganaron el año pasado, el quinto (y único) que queda es Clemson. Los Sooners han rebasado todas las expectativas de esta temporada, por que han ganado a pesar de un mariscal de baja estatura y 3 nuevos "coaches" entre otras cosas.  Pero eso podría llegar a ser su talón de Aquiles al mismo tiempo, con esas debilidades en su contra, no podrán ganar a un equipo constantemente tan fuerte como Clemson.

Pues ahi esta hasta ahora.  Solo que lo que sigue es una extraña sorpresa.  ¿Listos?  Escuchen bien las Vegas y los muy respetados analistas de ESPN ya anunciaron que creen que los Sooners serán victoriosos.  ¿Como ven?

Y para no quedarse atras, Flipper tambien escogio a los Sooners de Oklahoma!

Y EL HEISMAN ES...

 La noche del sabado pasado en una presentacion por ESPN en Nueva York se anuncio al ganador del muy deseado Heisman Trophy.  Los tres candidatos fueron Derrick Henry de Alabama, Christian McCaffrey de Stanford, y Deshaun Watson de Clemson.

Los tres tenian historias muy intresantes tanto en el campo y fuera de el.  En el caso de Henry y Watson, la pobreza y una incredible determinacion de salir delante, y familias que les apoyaban en todo.  Para McCaffrey, los logros de su abuelo (medalla de plata el los Olimpicos de 1960), su papa (un NFL All-Pro wide receiver con 3 anillos del Super Bowl), y sus 3 hermanos que tambien juegan futbol americano (uno acaba de ganar el campeonato estatal de Colorado como mariscal) le hicieron competir con una intensidad feroz. 

No fue gran sorpresa que gano Henry, pero la votacion fue mas estrecha de lo que se esperaba:  Henry con 1,832 puntos en total, McCaffrey con 1,539 , y Watson con 1,165. 

Los votos para premier lugar fueron 378, 290, y 148, respectivamente.

Ganadores Trofeo Heisman

El trofeo Heisman se entrega a los mejores jugadores de la NCAA. Muchas veces estos jugadores son elegidos en el draft de la NFL en la posición número 1, aunque esto no garantiza que van a tener una carrera prometedora en la NFL. Recuerdas a todos los jugadores que han ganado el Heisman?

What's on Your Wish List?

Black Friday is over.  Cyber Monday has come and gone.  And now--’tis the season.  The holiday season.  So what is on your Wish List?

That is a lovely sentiment, conjuring up beautiful lights, snow softly falling, 

and Santa in his sleigh.  

But for the football diehard, it goes a little differently—something like this:

‘Tis the season.  The NFL season.  So what is on your Wish List?

It’s true that fans could be dreaming of a new jersey, a travel mug, a new lamp, maybe a bottle opener--all in team colors with team logo.  What about a cheerleader of your own?

Or how about a team “ugly” sweater?  (Interesting how the much-maligned Christmas sweater of old has resurrected itself into a “must-have,” right?  But that is another story…)  This kind of Wish List ties in nicely also to the holiday season and  retailers’ dreams.

But it is not much of a stretch to figure out that the true fan’s Wish List has everything to do with his/her team and the Big Game.  So let’s get down to business.

December is probably the hardest month of the season.  Standings are solidifying—but not really.  Leaders are emerging—but not really.  Dark horses are making a surge—but not really.  Cellar-dwellers are looking toward next season—but not really.
 

Standings are solidifying:  Nate Silver, a quite successful prognosticator of AFC and NFC champions as well as Super Bowl winners --among many, many other things-- says that there is an 80% chance the winner of Super Bowl L will be one the following five teams: New England Patriots (28%), Carolina Panthers (20%), Arizona Cardinals (13%), Denver Broncos (10%), or Cincinnati Bengals (9%).  Seems solid.  But what about the Vikings or the Packers?  They are sitting quietly at 8-3 and 8-4, respectively.  Silver gives them less than a 3% chance.

Leaders are emerging:  Carolina is obvious, and so are the Patriots, in spite of their first loss.  However, Green Bay has taken a turn south, and pundits still do not seem to believe in Cincinnati or Denver one hundred percent.  Moreover, a 6-5 team now that wins its remaining five games will end up 11-5 (7 as of today)—typically a shoe-in record for the playoffs.

Dark horses are making a surge:  Those might be the seven aforementioned teams that are 6-5 as of now:  Steelers, Colts, Falcons, Chiefs, Seahawks, Texans, and Jets.  However, in true dark horse fashion, they are up and down, in and out.

Cellar-dwellers are looking toward next season:  For fans of the teams with perennial losing records, hope springs eternal and miracles can happen—the miracle of not ending up in last place, to be clear.  And that could happen.

What is the take-away?  Pretty simple:  Just like Christmas, we all have to wait to see what is in our Super Stocking on Super Bowl Sunday.  (I know, I know--cheap thrill below!)

El Viernes negro o Black Friday en Estados Unidos se refiere al dia despues de acción de gracias o Thanksgiving, en el que muchos compradores encuentran las mejores gangas de la temporada. Se le dice "negro" por que es cuando las grandes compañías pasan de números rojos a números negros.

La verdadera historia que se esconde tras el Viernes negro, sin embargo, no es tan bonita como los minoristas nos quieren hacer creer.  En la década de 1950, la policía de la ciudad de Filadelfia utilizó el término para describir el caos que se presentaba el día después de Acción de Gracias, cuando las multitudes de turistas y compradores  llenaban la ciudad en anticipación al gran juego de fútbol Americano entre el Army-Navy celebrado ese sábado de cada año. Los policias de la ciudad de Filadelfia no solo no podían tener el día libre sino que tenian una carga de trabajo extremadamente dura.

En algún momento a finales de los años ochenta, sin embargo, los minoristas encontraron una manera de reinventar el Viernes negro y convertirlo en algo que afectara positivamente, en lugar de hacerlo negativamente, a ellos y a sus clientes.

Según una encuesta antes de las vacaciones de este año por la Federación Nacional de Minoristas, un estimado de 135,8 millones de estadounidenses, sin duda, están pensando ir de compras durante el fin de semana de acción de gracias (el 58,7 por ciento de los encuestados), aunque más (183.8 millones de dólares, o el 79,6 por ciento) dijeron que sería o podría aprovechar las ofertas en linea que se ofrecerán en el Cyber Monday.

Para los fanáticos de la NFL en este Black Friday también hay ofertas, asi que ¡a usar la tarjeta de crédito!

CRAZY INTERESTING!

Just to lighten things up—the last couple of articles have been on the heavy side, I know—here are a few crazy, but interesting, facts about the NFL that even the most diehard fan might not know.  This is a quick “pick six”:

     1. Even if you signed up on the waiting list today to get Green Bay Packers’ season tickets, you would have to wait almost 1,000 years for your name to come up.

Supposedly, there are about 86,000 people on the waiting list now.  Since fewer than 100 season tickets are given up per year, the math says it would take 955 years for your name to make it to the top.  Hope your name is Methuselah!  (He is the guy in the Bible who lived to be 1,000 years old, remember?)

     2. The Wilson Company has been the exclusive and official maker of NFL footballs since 1941, producing 4,000 per day.

It takes 1 full cowhide to make just 10 balls.  The cows come only from Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas.  Each ball has 16 lace holes but only 1 continuous white lace.

     3. Since the Super Bowl era began in 1967, no team has ever “three-peated.”  In all of NFL history, there has been only one that did:  Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers, who won the NFL Championship in 1966, 1967, and 1968.

Is there any wonder the Super Bowl Trophy is named for him?  (Hint:  The Lombardi Trophy)

     4. The Lombardi Trophy costs $25,000.00.

     5. The new Rocky movie “Creed,” which is coming out soon, has a connection not just to the boxing ring but to the NFL, too.

Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the early movies, actually played 2 seasons for the Oakland Raiders in the early 1970s, then left to go on to battle Rocky Balboa in the ring.

     6. One of the oldest NFL records is also one of the most famous:  in 1929, one player, Ernie Nevers, was himself responsible for putting 40 points on the board by scoring 6 touchdowns and 4 extra points!

¡FRANCIA Y LA NFL!

Como un generoso gesto del NFL a Francia por la tragedia de la semana pasada, se presentaron muchos tributos en los estadios donde se jugaban partidos.  Había muchas expresiones de solidaridad, en muchas formas diferentes.  Lo mas bonito era lo autentico que fueron, que salieron del corazón, como los siguientes:

En cada uno de los 8 estadios con partidos tempranos habia un momento de silencio para recordar las muertes insensibles de las 129 personas, victimas de un acto de terrorismo incomprensible.

Ademas, en muchas de las pantallas grandes, donde por costumbre siempre se ven “Las Rayas y Estrellas” antes del comienzo, se veia “El Tricolor,” la bandera francesa.

El aguila, símbolo de los EEUU, se hecho a volar—pero en esta occasión lo anunciaron como representación de la gran ideal de la libertad, tan deseada por todos—y que, con toda razon, tambien es la primera palabra del lema de Francia, “Liberte, egalite, fraternite.” (Libertad, igualdad, hermandad).

En la tribuna habia muchas muestras de solidaridad para el pueblo francés.  Un cartel decía en francés, “Nous sommes tous francais”  (Somos todos franceses).  Otra gente trajo su propia bandera francesa.

También, en uno de los gestos mas conmovedor, Crockett Gillmore y Morgan Cox, 2 jugadores de los Baltimore Ravens, salieron corriendo al campo-- uno con la bandera de Francia y el otro con la bandera estadounidense—como para decir, “Francia, estamos contigo."

No es para paracer ni muy dramático ni muy cursi, pero fue grato saber que el fútbol americano, que muchos dicen que ocupa un lugar tan sagrado en los EEUU que es como otra religión, tuvo la decencia de dejarse a un lado para reconocer que aunque el deporte sea muy significativo para muchos, hay cosas de mucho más magnitud en este mundo—y la primordial es el valor de una vida humana.

Gracias, NFL.  Vive la France!

THE MATH SAYS...

Eight down, eight to go.  The math says it is mid-season.  Some say, "Oh, #*&$%!" Some say, "OMG!"  The conventional wisdom says it is time to take stock of the 2015 NFL teams.  

But, at this point, rather than taking a shot at answers (well, really more like opinions, right?) about which team is where now and where it appears it will end up-- perhaps just asking the questions and looking at the facts is more prudent.  Because as we all know, “On any given Sunday…” 

To that end, this is a compilation of 8 key questions, with short analyses.  They are generated from a variety of sources* and seem to be those resonating the most across the board.

Here we go:

        1. What impact will Andrew Luck’s injury (abdominal muscle and lacerated kidney; out 2-6 weeks) have on the Indianapolis Colts hopes for the playoffs?  

      Maybe minimal:  They have the best back-up QB in the league in Matt Hasselbeck, say many.  The offensive line looked good against the strong Bronco defense.  They are in good shape to win their division, having already beaten the Jaguars and Texans.  

      Maybe huge:  Luck has a 90+ rating under the brand-new Offensive Coordinator, obviously not easy to replace.  Hasselbeck is not Luck.  His consistency is an issue, even with a good O line, as evidenced earlier in the season when he subbed for Luck.  He is not as good in the pocket, the brand-new Offensive Coordinator’s favored scheme.  He also has a big number of turnovers.

         2. Will the New England Patriots be able to get past the season-ending injury to running back Dion Lewis?  
     Maybe yes:  It is what Bill Belichick does (well).  The Patriots have had to do it many times before and have pulled it off.  Moreover, they are as dominant now as they were in the 2007 perfect season, in a comparison of the first eight games.  

      Maybe no:  Lewis has proven to be the 3^rd most valuable player on the team this season, after Brady and Gronkowski, as his stats show. His caginess in both the backfield and the secondary is a dynamic no other back for the Patriots equals this season.

           3. Are the Carolina Panthers really “for real”?  

      Maybe yes:  They are undefeated at 8-0.  They are #3 in this week’s ESPN Power Rankings.  They have made it through what most will agree was the hardest part of their season, beating Seattle, Green Bay, Indianapolis, and Philadelphia.  

      Maybe no:  They used up a great amount of energy in getting through the most difficult part of their season, but they might not have the sufficient stamina to successfully go all the way.  They still do not “feel” completely “real.”

          4. Is the Denver Broncos defense as great as it seems?  

      Maybe yes:  No team has scored 30 points against them. No team has passed for 300 yards.  Only three teams have accumulated over 300 total yards.  One sportswriter calls them the “boa constrictor” defense for their suffocating play.  

      Maybe no:  There is a case to make that they are the ones responsible for the Bronco’s first loss.  After 6 mindless penalties last Sunday against the Colts, they looked like something:  arrogant for thinking they are above the law, big-headed for believing the hype and thinking they can do no wrong, selfish for not thinking of the consequences of a penalty for the whole team, immature for allowing juvenile impulses to win, or just too aggressive, for which Wade Phillips has to find a way to take it down a notch.  If it goes unchecked, it puts the Broncos in a precarious position—and losers are rarely touted as great.

         5. Has the death knell sounded for the Dallas Cowboys?  

      Probably:  They are a talented team but just too injury-ravaged to do anything more this season.  Even with Dez Bryant back and Tony Romo slated to be in week 11, it is too little, too late.  The playoffs are out of their reach, but they are a great choice for a comeback team next year.

         6. Are the Atlanta Falcons really that bad? 

      Maybe:  After the loss to San Francisco, a team with little talent and arguably one of the worst first-round QB draft picks ever in Blaine Gabbert, it is beginning to look true.  Moreover, they have lost 3 of their last 4 games.  

      Maybe not:  They started the season 5-0.

           7. Should Aaron Rodgers take the blame for the Green Bay Packers' 2 losses?  

      Maybe(at least a little):  His productivity has declined statistically in the last 4 weeks, and it seems clear that he really misses Jordy Nelson, who was his great safety valve in beating corners and getting open. Moreover, his early chemistry with James Jones has regressed. But a top-tier player like Rodgers should find a way to make it happen regardless.  

      Maybe not:  The offensive line has not been playing as a unit. Defenses have been able to keep him in the pocket and force bad throws. He is not able to scramble and make big throws/plays. And the Packer’s defensive secondary is depleted.

       8. Can the Minnesota Vikings continue to rise?  

      Probably yes (surprisingly):  They are now 6-2 (who knew?) and tied with the Packers in the NFC North—and the Vikings hold the tie-breaker! They are in the Top 10 of several different Power Rankings for the first time this season. Coach Zimmer has a history of putting together good defenses and has one this year. They had the good judgement to go with Teddy Bridgewater as QB, not Johnny Manziel, and he is progressing nicely. The whole team is gaining confidence each week, and they have been battle-tested. One sportswriter calls them the most intriguing team of the season.

And, as always, now we wait and hope, wait and pray, wait and fume, wait and weep, and wait and wait and wait some more…until that Big Day in February.
